Who is Ion Onut ?
A trucker who killed three people after tracking dating sites for casual s*x while driving on a busy highway has been jailed for nearly nine years.
Ion Onut, 41, was “totally oblivious” when he crashed into stopped traffic on the A1 (M) in County Durham, seconds after scrolling on his phone.
Dash cam footage showed the cab of his truck catching fire and it traveled 100 m (328 ft) along the road after the initial collision caused an explosion.
He was “totally engrossed” in the “pursuit of sexual gratification” and didn’t slow down, driving into traffic at 58 mph, Durham Crown Court heard.
The couple David Daglish and Elaine Sullivan of Seaham, County Durham, and Paul Mullen, of Washington, Tyne and Wear, were killed instantly.

Onut was looking at the adult websites S *** Today and Mystic Match and had spent £ 50 to interact with users.
He was browsing the sites and editing his own profile until 40 minutes before the accident, near the Bowburn junction around 6:15 p.m. meter. July 15, 2021.
Onut admitted three counts of causing death by dangerous driving.
He was jailed for eight years and 10 months and banned from driving for 10 years after his release.
Upon sentencing, Judge James Adkin told him: “You weren’t asleep at the wheel, which would have been pretty bad, in fact, you were surfing the Internet looking for occasional sexual partners.”
Onut lived with his family in Galashiels, Scotland, and transported fertilizers for a shipping company.
He initially came to Vaxhaull Crossland with Dalglish, 57, and Sullivan, 59.
He then crashed 51-year-old Mr. Mullen’s Toyota Hilux under another truck before continuing on the highway, leaving three more injured.
An earlier incident caused traffic to pile up, with a set limit of 50 mph, but Onut was seen crossing lanes before the tragedy.
Prosecutor Nick Dry told the court: “He was completely engrossed in Internet activity, seeking sexual gratification, for an extended period of time while controlling a large cargo vehicle on a busy highway.”
Ms. Sullivan’s son Junior recounted his grief over the loss of his mother and his stepfather.
He described feeling “unbearable rage at seeing other Drivers using their cell phones.”
Mr. Mullen’s daughter, Orlaigh, told the court that he was a hardworking family man, a loving father of three, and that he came close to becoming a grandfather.
Meanwhile, Lauren Cawton was left with chronic pain in her legs and said her life was ruined.
Molly Smith, who was in the final weeks of her pregnancy, revealed how the accident had left her feeling”stressed, angry and guilty.”
Another trucker, Michael Hosty, who rushed to help Onut out of his burning cab, said that he now had PTSD.
Defending, Richard Bloomfield apologized on behalf of Onut for the “devastation” caused.
Speaking after the case, Sergeant Catherine Iley said: “It was incredibly distressing and upsetting for those who witnessed the collision and for the emergency services, including police, fire and paramedics, who attended the scene.
“The horror of what they witnessed that day will undoubtedly remain with them for many years to come.”
