Who is Michelle Yi?
A California Pilates isntructor and former Survivor contestant needed multiple points after a homeless woman wielding a metal cane assaulted two other people near the crime-ridden Santa Monica boardwalk that morning. Michelle Yi, 37, was opening her Pilates studio where she teaches shortly before 6 a.m. Thursday when she noticed a scruffy woman approaching the front door . “She was screaming all kinds of things like, ‘You stole my identity’ and, ‘You’re a prostitute,’ said Yi, who completed on season 14 of the Fiji-based reality series in 2007.
“Santa Monica has a homeless problem and I’ve dealt with this kind of thing before. Then I said, “Ma’am, you can’t be here. You have to go.”
The woman then pounced on Yi with a knife and a metal baton, she said, and was stabbed in her left bicep. And then she hit me on the right hand with the cane. My Apple Watch was shattered. ”
The deranged woman continued her assault by hitting Yi on the head with the baton, which broke her face, she said.
“There was blood everywhere,” Yo said, shuddering. Yi says one of her students immediately called 911 but only received a message saying the operators were busy. They finally enlisted her help by stopping a police car.
“When we arrived, the suspect was still at the scene,” said Lt. Rudy Flores, a spokesman for the Santa Monica Police Department. “The agents detained her and interviewed victims and witnesses.” Yi was hospitalized and received multiple stitches to her face, but she suffered no fractures , an X-ray determined.
She remained a bit confused as to why this happened to her, but she suspects that race may have played a role in the attacks.
“I can’t say why she attacked me, of all people,” Yi says. But she was a white lady who attacked three people that morning. Another victim was an elderly Asian man walking her dog, and the third was also a person of color. I can’t prove if she was racially motivated or not, but she was yelling all kinds of horrible things at me. The facts are what they are.
Police confirmed the other attacks, but suggested the women might have mental health problems. “It seemed like she was mentally unstable and maybe off his medication,” Flores said. “That probably led her to do what she did.” Police have not named the suspect, but charged her with three counts of assault with a deadly weapon. She has not been charged with any hate crime. Yi, who finished in 10th place in her Survivor season, is still reeling from the attack.
“She was really horrible,” she said. It was dark when this happened. I hope the police have more protections during the hours we need them most. ”
She said that she has no family from her living near her, as her parents are in Taiwan while her siblings live in the Bay Area. “Physically, I am recovering,” she said. “Emotionally, it’s more difficult, but it should be okay.” The attacks come as the state of California and Southern California in particular continue to suffer from a devastating homeless problem. In May, exclusive photos from DailyMail.com showed tent-dwellers exiting Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles and the freeway ramps in Long Beach, converting a short stretch of prime property south of Los Angeles. Santa Monica border as the nation’s most recent point of conflict between business interests. and those forced to abandon their homes. And while tourists and locals still visit the iconic boardwalk, a place they have long shared with the weirdos and the crazy, the number of visitors has dwindled as they have to deal with an ever-growing army of homeless and the crime that accompanies them.
Residents in the area are considering moving, but property prices have fallen 10 to 30 percent.
