Who is Nurse Lucy ?

Nurse Lucy Letby appeared in court ahead of a trial in which she will be charged with murdering eight girls and boys and the attempted murder of 10 other babies during an alleged year-long massacre.

The nurse, 32, was working in the neonatal unit at Countess of Chester Hospital when the alleged crimes are said to have occurred between June 2015 and June 2016.

The University of Chester graduate was once the face of a £3million fundraising campaign at the hospital.

He appeared at Chester Crown Court via video link from HMP Bronzefield in Ashford, Surrey today.

Letby spoke only to confirm her identity during the 50-minute hearing.

Around a dozen relatives of the victims appeared to be listening to the hearing, with Justice Goss also appearing via video link from Nottingham Crown Court.

Letby, from Hereford, is charged with the murder of five boys and three girls.

She is also charged with the attempted murder of give other boys and five girls.

A court order prohibited reporting the identities of surviving and deceased children allegedly attacked by Letby, and also prohibits the identification of parents and witnesses .

Today’s hearing addressed Letby’s pre-trial arrangements at Manchester Crown Court, which is scheduled to start on October 4 later this year with an estimated time of six months.

Two other pre-trial hearings have been set for April and June or July.

Judge Goss kept Letby in custody until the next hearing.

Letby had first been arrested by Cheshire Police in 2018 after a spike in the number of deaths in her neonatal unit.

She was arrested again for the same alleged crimes in 2019 and again last year.

Police launched an investigation after the hospital raised concerns about the high number of deaths between March 2015 and July 2016, which were said to be 10 percent higher than average.

An internal investigation was carried out when doctors discovered that the premature babies had died after heart and lung failure, but that it was unusually impossible to resuscitate them.

Letby has pleaded not guilty to all charges.  @
