A court heard 27-year-old Paul Marsh inflict catastrophic head injuries on Jessica Dalgleish at his home in Sandgate, near Folkestone, on December 21, 2019, after he reacted “ with anger and frustration ” while I was trying to see the soccer results on Sky Sports. .

After carrying the ‘extremely vulnerable’ young woman upstairs, he recklessly but forcefully threw her onto her bed, causing her to hit the back of her head against a hard surface.

Marsh had grown increasingly frustrated with caring for Jessica in the weeks leading up to her death. Bruises were discovered on her face and head, suggesting that he had assaulted her on previous occasions, which were not reported to the police at the time.

Witness evidence showed that she carried out the fatal attack after the little girl had trouble eating all of her lunch.

He called emergency services at 3.10 pm on the day of the murder, claiming that he had discovered Jessica on the ground, stunned. Paramedics arrived and arranged for her to be flown to specialist care in London, but she died in hospital in the afternoon on Christmas Eve 2019.

Marsh suggested that she may have fallen down the stairs while playing, but her account of her incident was unclear, prompting Kent Police detectives to investigate.

Later, medical experts found that Jessica’s injuries were more likely to have been caused by an impact, such as being thrown against the headboard or the side of her bed.

Marsh was charged with Jessica’s manslaughter and child cruelty and was found guilty on November 3 after a trial.

At Maidstone Crown Court on Monday, the 27-year-old, formerly of Lydd, was jailed for a total of 11 years.

Detective Chief Inspector Neil Kimber, Senior Investigative Officer for the Kent and Essex Directorate of Serious Crimes, said: “This is a tragic case where a young woman’s life has been stolen from her before it really began.

Marsh was reluctant to get medical care for Jessica the day she inflicted these injuries and has since tried to evade justice by changing her account and lying about what actually happened that day.

“A meticulous investigation by my team, including sensitive interviews with several witnesses and a careful analysis of complicated medical evidence, has led to Marsh being convicted of involuntary manslaughter.

“I hope that today’s jury verdicts and sentencing give Jessica’s family a sense of closure as they continue to mourn her tragic death.”

‘Pain and suffering’

Jessica’s mother called Marsh an “animal” and a “monster” in her victim impact statement.

“I pray that the monster who took her suffers every day from her miserable life,” she said.

“I will never recover from losing my baby, Jessica was a light in the world.”

In sentencing Marsh, the Honorable Judge Cavanagh said: “The whole family regrets the life that Jessica will not have now and she suffers the trauma of knowing how she died.

“It is clear that the death of this adorable child has caused great pain and suffering to a great number of people.”

Marsh was sentenced to nine years in jail for manslaughter and two more years for child cruelty, consecutive.
